Prayers, and any help that can be given, requested!

While I was at the local outdoor summer social event (I was one of the speakers), I handled a very friendly orange cat. he got scared and scratched me and ran off. This was not an "attack" but just a "scared/get away" attempt.

(I have been told he later scratched/attacked another person, but I do not know for sure)

While I was dealing with a totally different animal case, where a friend of mine actually got bitten, but the cat is known, the health department informed me of the following:

  1. Cats are considered a primary vector for rabies in Philadelphia
  2. Cats in a park are at worst risk, because of racoons
  3. Scratches are considered a primary exposure, just like bites. (because they lick their paws)
  4. If the cat cannot be found, it must be assumed to be rabid

Therefore, according to the Philadelphia Health Department, since the cat cannot be found I MUST get the following:

  1. Tetanus shot
  2. Augmentin antibiotics (for cat scratch fever)
  3. The entire rabies shot regimen (6 doctor's visits; the first day you get both the first rabies vaccine, AND immu-globulin?)

Anyone who got scratched or bitten by the cat must report the incident to the health department. I talked to a VERY nice lady named Loretta Brown, after talking to a bunch of nasty clerks...

Now this is going to cost me, big time, in money, time, and anxiety. I am terrified of needles. I mean that literally, I have a phobia about them. also, since I will be going to my private doctor not a clinic, I will be paying every time I have to go in for the office visit! To top all of this off, I will be needed shots during Worldcon! and during Worldcon prep.

It is apparently about a 2,000 dollar course of treatment. I am hoping my coverage is good, as I do not qualify for free care at the clinic.

(IF his location was known, then he could just be isolated for ten days, and checked... and I wouldn't need the shots!!!!!!)

I am asking for prayers as well, this has been a really bad month...

I have had heat exhaustion, money has been very tight, dad is in the hospital again, in ICU, and now I need rabies shots!

Monday, August 20, 2001 This is my "war report" from Pennsic.
It is true.
It is personal chatter,
And a bit long,
But if you like rhyme you may find it of interest.
(for the record: Kirsten Dystel is my SCA name)
you may find more information on the SCA at www.sca.org

I arrived at Pennsic the week before war, and left during war...

Kirsten

How I spent my Pennsic War,
By Kirsten Dystel, thirty-four.

Arrived on Wednesday, pre-war week,
And set about my camp to seek.
Found my camp and set my tent,
Then off to take a class I went.
The class was held in AS two,
As hotter still the day it grew.
I went to the Chirurgeons next,
To fill out forms, I thought it best,
So they would know my allergies
Which do far worse than make me sneeze.
With that done I went nearby
To Herald’s point, with much a sigh,
I tried to document a name,
So much work for such a game,
The heat grew more, and stifling still,
And I began to feel quite ill.
The medic’s found me, quite unwell,
And thanks to them I’m here to tell,
I had not drunk enough they deemed,
Although that isn’t how it seemed.
The long and short, when all is said,
Was that I had to take to bed,
And Portersville, the medics, thought,
That intravenous fluid ought,
Be given me. Now I was scared,
But they seemed sure, and surely cared,
So two bags full were given me,
Before I ever had to pee.
The rest of war I did not dare,
To set a foot out of my lair,
Without my trusty water cup,
And several bottles all filled up.
I went to classes very few,
Because it was too hot I knew,
And found out, much to my dismay
That most of what I brought was way
Too warm to wear this Pennsic year,
And so with sighs and much a tear,
I could not wear what I held dear!
I did to herald’s point return,
And more about the process learn,
And registered two names and more,
And badges almost numbered four!
I shopped until my money spent,
And in my checkbook made a dent.
I worked two shifts as medic scribe,
To thank them, since I did survive,
And lastly took a four hour class,
Which happily I say I passed.
So CPR and AED
I learned for quite a modest fee.
Then Thursday came and I left war,
For that is when my ride was for,
Returned to home all safe and sound,
Where it was just as hot, I found.
Now thanks are owed to all and one,
At Camp Kilkenny: I had fun!
And too the Heralds, all of whom,
For myriad questions they made room.
Thanks also to the medics all,
Who gave their time to be on call.
And many more, I cannot name,
Who gave their time to make this game
More safe, more fun, and so I send
My war report is at an end.
